چکیده

Abstract Background Wildland firefighting requires continuous attention while exposed to long working hours and sub-optimal sleep. These stressors may induce a state of cognitive fatigue, which poses risk worker safety due impaired judgment reduced awareness. Methods The current study employs within-subject, observational design examine the effect sleep schedule characteristics on variables related stress function. Cognitive function is measured subjectively, via validated 7-point scales (i.e. Samn-Perelli Fatigue Scale Stanford Sleepiness Scale), objectively, reaction time psychomotor vigilance task. Sleep log wrist-worn actigraphy. Stress autonomic nervous system imbalance by changes in heart rate variability chest monitor). Linear regression analyses will be performed test if or predict Progress date A pilot (N=4) was conducted during 2021 fire season inform methodology. As July 2022, representative sample 50 firefighters (13 F) have been recruited across all regions British Columbia (BC), Canada. Data collection for ongoing continue until September 2022. Intended outcome impact This investigation entails both theoretical applied benefits. Its direct relevance occupational health could improve (1) providing insight recommendations towards improved fatigue management policy within BC Wildfire Service (2) testing practicality mobile tools designed monitor levels sleep, stress,

Sleep Quantity and Quality of Ontario Wildland Firefighters Across a Low-Hazard Fire Season

OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to assess the sleep quality, quantity, and fatigue levels of Canadian wildland firefighters while on deployment. METHODS Objective and subjective sleep and fatigue measures were collected using actigraphy and questionnaires during non-fire (Base) and fire (Initial Attack and Project) deployments. RESULTS Suboptimal sleep quality and quantity were more freq...

Acute upper and lower respiratory effects in wildland firefighters.

OBJECTIVES To assess acute respiratory effects experienced by wildland firefighters. METHODS We studied two Interagency Hotshot Crews with questionnaires, spirometry, and measurement of albumin, eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) as indicators of inflammation in sputum and nasal lavage fluid. Assessments were made preseason, postfire, and postseason. RESULTS Fift...

Wildland Firefighters and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (adhd)

—Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common disorders of childhood, affecting 3 to 7 percent of the population (American Psychiatric Association 2000). Research has indicated that the prevalence rate of ADHD in adult populations is approximately 4.4 percent and that the majority of those cases go untreated (Kessler et al. 2006). To date, no known research has inve...

Lung function changes in wildland firefighters working at prescribed burns.

CONTEXT Although decline in lung function across workshift has been observed in wildland firefighters, measurements have been restricted to days when they worked at fires. Consequently, such results could have been confounded by normal circadian variation associated with lung function. OBJECTIVES We investigated the across-shift changes in lung function of wildland firefighters, and the effec...
